What's going to happen after you've been on GLP-1 RAs for some time and then stopped them? Is weight regain inevitable? It doesn't seem so.
A recent study by Epic Research examined the long-term effects of weight loss medications semaglutide and liraglutide, revealing encouraging outcomes for many patients even after stopping the drugs. One year after discontinuation, 56.2% of semaglutide users and 55.7% of liraglutide users maintained their reduced weight or continued losing weight.
Despite this, some challenges remain: about 18% of individuals regained all the weight they had lost or even exceeded their initial weight. The study underscores the importance of combining GLP-1 receptor agonist therapies with sustainable lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and regular physical activity, to ensure lasting weight management.
These findings highlight the potential of these medications for helping patients achieve long-term health improvements while emphasizing the need for personalized post-treatment plans to minimize the risk of weight regain.
